Philadelphia Yimby recently featured an update on
construction progress for Jefferson Health Specialty Care Pavilion at 1101 Chestnut
Street in Center City, Philadelphia, part of the mixed-use East Market
development.
It is the largest construction project in Jefferson’s
200-year long history and will concentrate many of the institution’s different
clinical practices into one, state-of-the-art medical building. The exterior
architecture and the public spaces for the 20 story, 462,000 square foot
ambulatory care facility are designed by Ennead Architects and being developed
by National Real Estate Development.
Forging a new architectural identity and brand for
Jefferson Health, the building is clad in a dynamic sculptural glass façade
composed of compound curved ‘pleats’ recalling the city’s history of textile
innovation. The facility establishes a strong new presence and sets the
direction for the institution’s further development.
The Philadelphia Yimby article describes the design,
saying, “The facade at once seems to gently ripple in the breeze while still
channeling classic Art Deco verticality of prewar skyscrapers. Despite its
unabashed modernity, the concave bays of the glass exterior appears to pay
homage to the local context as an inversion of the projecting convex bay
windows on nearby historic buildings.”
